### Adding support for playlists and channels
Before youtube-dl can download entire playlists and channels, it has to be able to download a single video. So make sure you successfully followed the [new extractor tutorial](#adding-support-for-a-new-site).
Downloading multiple videos is fundamentally similar to downloading a single video. All the magic still happens in `_real_extract` but this time it will return a slightly different dictionary. We will use a helper method `_entries`, but it's not mandatory.
1. Start with this simple template and add it to `youtube_dl/extractor/yourextractor.py`:
```python
# coding: utf-8
from __future__ import unicode_literals
from .common import InfoExtractor
import re
class YourExtractorIE(InfoExtractor):
"Single-video-page extractor"
pass
class YourPlaylistExtractorIE(InfoExtractor):
_VALID_URL = r'https?://(?:www\.)?yourextractor\.com/playlist/(?P<id>[0-9]+)'
_TEST = {
'url': 'https://yourextractor.com/playlist/',
# The tests should find at least this many videos in the playlist
'playlist_mincount': 1,
'info_dict': {
'id': '42',
'title': 'Playlist title goes here',
# TODO more properties, either as:
# * A value
# * MD5 checksum; start the string with md5:
# * A regular expression; start the string with re:
# * Any Python type (for example int or float)
}
}
def _entries(self, url):
# We will use `self.url_result()` to fill this list with entries
# like this:
# {
# '_type': 'url',
# 'url': 'video url', # Url to a video page, not a video file
# 'ie_key': ie, # Our single-video-page extractor, see below
# 'id': 'video id',
# 'title': 'video title'
# }
entries = []
while url is not None:
page_id = self._match_id(url)
webpage = self._download_webpage(url, page_id)
# Get the urls of every single-video-page
page_urls = re.findall(
r'<a[^>] class="video" href="(?P<url>https?://(?:www\.)?yourextractor\.com/watch/[0-9]+)">',
webpage)
for u in page_urls:
# Here we pass our single-video-page extractor
entries.append(
self.url_result(u, YourExtractorIE.ie_key()))
# Gets the url of the next page or `None`
url = self._search_regex(
r'<li class="next-page"><a href="(?P<url>https?://(?:www\.)?yourextractor\.com/playlist/[0-9]+/page/[0-9]+)">',
webpage, 'next page url', default=None)
return entries
def _real_extract(self, url):
playlist_id = self._match_id(url)
webpage = self._download_webpage(url, playlist_id)
entries = self._entries(url)
playlist_title = self._html_search_regex(r'<h1>(.+?)</h1>', webpage, 'title')
playlist_description = self._og_search_description(webpage)
# Here we can see how playlists are different.
# `self.playlist_result()` will return a dictionary that looks
# like this:
# {
# '_type': 'playlist',
# 'id': 'playlist id',
# 'title': 'playlist title',
# 'description': 'playlist description',
# 'entries': [...] # A list of entries, see `self._entries()`
# }
return self.playlist_result(entries, playlist_id,
playlist_title, playlist_description)
```
2. Add an import in [`youtube_dl/extractor/extractors.py`](https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl/blob/master/youtube_dl/extractor/extractors.py).
3. Run `python test/test_download.py TestDownload.test_YourPlaylistExtractor`, same as for the single video extractor.
## youtube-dl coding conventions
This section introduces a guide lines for writing idiomatic, robust and future-proof extractor code.
